“That took you long enough,” my cousin quips when I walk into my office thirty-five minutes after his call. I notice the smirk on his face, and I wonder if he’s happy about my current relationship status.

“I’m distracted.”

“Si, you are,” he agrees. “I understand, Mason, but this is one job we need to fully focus on. We can’t have outside distractions. I wonder if—”

“Just tell me what the fuck we need to do, cugino. I don’t need you to give me life advice right now. I know my father’s organization is under threat. Tell me how to fix it, and I’ll do it.”

He raises his hands in surrender and offers a curt bow. “Fine. We will talk about your girl another time. Right now, we have to meet with Mancini,” he tells me, pulling out one of his fat cigars. The place already stinks worse than my father’s office when he was alive.

The memory of being a little boy, racing into the large foreboding office where my father would conduct his meetings, slams into me suddenly, reminding me of where I came from, who I was.

Father was a proud man, he never asked for help, always had the respect of his men, but it was when I ran up to him to tell him I loved him, only then did my father smile. As his only child, I was his pride and joy. The son who would one day take over his organization, the one who was meant to rule with an iron fist, just like he did.

“Do you miss him?” Cristiano asks as he lights the end of the cigar that soon billows with thick white smoke, making his expression impossible to see through the haze.

“All the time.”

“He would’ve liked your principessa,” my cousin tells me, blowing out the smoky cloud.

I grab my documents, which I’d printed out the night before, and slip them into an envelope. The contract my father had with Mancini is the only thing standing in the way of me killing the fucker for encroaching on our territory. “Oh? And how do you know this?” Arching a brow at Russo, I wait for his response, but he merely offers me a shrug. “Cugino, ti piacerebbe condividere?” I ask him if he’d like to share what he knows about my father.

“Your father understood about loving someone,” he tells me, waving the cigar in the air, making cloudy white circles. “He and your mother were . . . a forever couple.”

“That means nothing. He didn’t know Savannah, and if he did, he would agree with my choice to send her away. Actually.” I finally stop all movement, meeting the dark gaze of my cousin. “He would’ve insisted I end her life.”

“Perhaps, but love . . . That’s a whole other ballgame, Mason.” The corner of his mouth tilts as he smirks at me. “L’amore fa girare il mondo,” he says. Love makes the world go around.

“And it’s also love that can kill you.”

“Touché, cugino, touché.”
